Being the best dressed guest doesn’t necessarily mean rewriting your entire personal style but it’s important to check what the bride and groom have listed as the dress code. From black tie to destination, the mood of the nuptials will determine what outfit is most appropriate for the occasion.

It’s time to pull out all the stops. Think gowns with floor-sweeping hemlines cut from elegant fabrics and finished with classic details. While you don’t necessarily have to wear black, it’s common to steer towards darker hues for these occasions: think navy, emerald and grey. Fabrics like silk and crepe will help set the tone for your outfit, while embellished accessories and a pair of sleek heeled sandals or pumps promise to cinch your look with certain elegance.

Formal
A notch below black tie, formal weddings are slightly less strict when it comes to dressing rules. You should still choose a long or midi-length dress but there is room to have a little more fun with colour and cut. Jumpsuits or tailored two-pieces (in tonal hues) are also a great option here. And while the general rule of weddings is that only the bride should wear white, some formal affairs might actually encourage guests to don pearlescent hues. If in doubt, always ask the happy couple for their preference.

For example, if you choose a shorter skirt, be sure to offset it with more dramatic accessories. If you’re jetting off somewhere for a wedding, the location of a destination ceremony will give you clues as to what to pack. For tropical locales, lean-in to beachy vibes and choose flowing dresses, bold earrings and a bag that can fit sunglasses and SPF. Wineries or weekend getaways in the country call for flirty florals and unstructured two-piece sets. A pair of wide-leg pants and a statement top creates just the right vibe for celebrating, while still being comfortable and casual for wearing to all-day affairs.
